I’ve been doing some research on the Early Church Fathers and have found some quotes by almost all of them on Reformational doctrines. In the future I will be posting these quotes in there respected context to prove that the early church had at least a notion of the great doctrines put on the front burner by the Reformers. Here are some quotes on election by Ignatius of Antioch.
“Out of the fullness of God the Father you have been blessed with large
numbers and are predestined from eternity to enjoy forever continual and unfading glory.” -The Letter of Ignatius, to the Ephesians, 1:1.
“You are dear to God, the Father of Jesus Christ, elect and a real credit to him, being completely at peace by reason of the Passion of Jesus Christ, who is our Hope, since we shall rise in union with him.” -to the Trallians, 1:1
“Seeing, then, all things have an end, these two things are simultaneously set before us— death and life; and every one shall go unto his own place.” [A possible reference to Acts 1:25 where Judas is clearly portrayed as being destined to his own place.] To the Magnesians 5:1.
“Ignatius, who is also called Theophorus, to the Church sojourning in Syria, which has obtained mercy from God, and been elected by Christ, and which first (Acts 11:26) received the name Christ” -to the Antiochians, 1:1.
“our [Lord], by whom are all things; 1 Corinthians 8:6 and also one Holy Spirit, who wrought 1 Corinthians 12:11 in Moses, and in the prophets and apostles; and also one baptism, which is administered that we should have fellowship with the death of the Lord; and also one elect Church; there ought likewise to be but one faith in respect to Christ.” -to the Philippians 1:2.
